With our partner,
The experience
Authentic cultural exchange happens through daily life: household time, shared meals, and local traditions. During your homestay, you’ll gain a view of culture you can’t find in a classroom.
Your unique expertise in your own language and a willingness to teach are the most important things you can bring to this experience. English is the lingua franca among many regions of Europe, making time with a fluent, native speaker a sought-after asset to German learners of all ages.

FAQs
Do I need a TEFL/TESOL certification to participate?
No. You’ll volunteer under the guidance of a local team. You’ll have an orientation session and ESL crash course.
What is teaching like?
One-on-one tutoring will take place at the home of your host family with a maximum of 15 hours per week. Your responsibilities may include preparing tutoring topics and lessons in advance, practicing English in creative ways, such as through games and activities, and/or providing support to independent studies. Limited experience is fine! The most important thing to have is a willingness to teach something you are already an expert in: your own language!
What visa will I obtain?
You’ll only need to obtain a regular tourist visa. This is also why the number of tutoring hours are firmly capped. As a tourist, you cannot exceed the number of volunteer tutor hours or get paid wages.
Where will I be staying?
You’ll have a private room in a private home. Host family homes vary, but families are generally middle class and are vetted by the local team who conducts background screenings and home visits prior to host family onboarding. You’ll receive your teaching assignment prior to your arrival in the country, and you’ll have time to meet and acclimate before you begin your tutoring duties.
What can I do when I am not tutoring?
As you’ll be living like a local in a German city or town, it’s up to you! You’ll want to establish a tutoring schedule with your host family, and our advisors are here to support you.
How does this program work?
In partnership with the local language learning program, Ayusa Germany, InterExchange provides support for the application and pre-departure trip planning. Once you are in-country, local coordinators will be available to assist you with tutoring, life adjustments, and travel support.
